“Top Valu” products must meet 5 criteria: consumer taste, food safety and environmental friendliness, accurate and clear labeling, reasonable pricing, and consumer satisfaction.

Since July, eel-flavored tra fish has been available at 1,700 AEON stores and many supermarkets at lower prices than Japan’s eel. Vietnam’s tra fish seasoned to the taste of local people has opened new opportunities for Vietnam  to export Tra fish to Japan.

Ta Duc Minh, Commercial Counsellor and Chief Representative of Vietnam’s Industry and Trade Ministry in Japan, said tTra fish exports to Japan earned 14 million USD in 2016 and 7 million USD in the first five months of this year.

Minh proposed diversifying processed foods to increase export revenues. “We must ensure food safety and hygiene while diversifying our products to meet consumer demand. We need to study market segments and create appropriate products.”

Japan has strict criteria for imported products so Vietnamese exporters need to standardize all procedures, including from farming, hygiene, packaging, and labeling.

In addition to tra fish, Vietnam exports to Japan other products like bananas, mangos and red-flesh dragon fruit. About 500 made-in-Vietnam products are sold at AEON malls in Japan.
