Bach Long Vy - the most-remote island in the Gulf of Tonkin

(VOVWORLD) - Bach Long Vy is the farthest island off the coast of Vietnam in the Gulf of Tonkin. Let’s cross the sea to explore its wild and magnificent beauty.
Bach Long Vy island district is located in the center of the Gulf of Tonkin, which is 133km from Hai Phong city and takes 6 to 7 hours to reach by boat.

The island has an area of nearly 2 sq.km at high tide and more than 3 sq.km at low tide. The road around the island is about 5 km.

Bach Long Vi is located in the middle of one of the eight major fishing grounds in the Gulf of Tonkin, covering an area of over 1,500 sq. nautical miles with abundant seafood resources and a rich marine ecosystem.

The islanders live mainly on fishing, processing, and other fishing services.

62 volunteers from the Hai Phong Youth Voluntary Group settled on the island in 1993. Now the island has a population of about 700 people.

Over the last 30 years soldiers and locals on the island have built up the infrastructure, changing the appearance of the island.

Piers and locks on the island can serve up to 2,000 ships to shelter from storms and trade their fishing haul. |
Schools, clinics, cultural houses, squares, and parks have met people’s needs. |
A highlight of the island is the Bach Long Vy lighthouse built on the mountain peak overlooking the East Sea. |
Bach Long pagoda and Saint Tran Hung Dao temple are important spiritual sites for the islanders. |
Bach Long Vy island is not only an important outpost for the nation but it also plays a strategic role in Hai Phong city’s marine economic development. |
Infrastructure has been built to turn the island into a fishing logistics and rescue center. |
Fresh water reservoirs and wind power plants have been built to serve socio-economic development and national defense. |
With modern ships making it more convenient to transport goods and passengers to the island, Bach Long Vi is getting closer to the mainland and opening up a lot of opportunities for tourism. |
