2012 Nobel Prize for Medicine awarded

(VNA/VOVworld) – The Nobel Committee has announced the 2012 Nobel Prize for Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel recipients are John B Gurdon of England and Shinya Yamanaka of Japan for their revolutionary stem cell research.

They will share the 1.2 million USD prize for their discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become multifunctional immature cells capable of developing into all tissues of the body. This breakthrough provides an insight into the development of cells and living beings. The award will be presented in Stockholm on December 10, on the death anniversary of Alfred Nobel, the prize founder.
