In their joint statement, the ministers expressed deep concerns over the outbreak of the acute respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which has disrupted social life and economies around the world. They emphasized the “importance of ASEAN solidarity and the spirit of a cohesive and responsive ASEAN community in facing the outbreak of COVID-19 and similar challenges”, quoting Vietnam’s statement on ASEAN's joint response to the COVID-19 epidemic.
They agreed to take a collective course of action to mitigate the economic impacts of COVID-19, and pledged to keep the ASEAN market open for trade and investment, share regional information, and coordinate efforts to meet the economic challenges caused by COVID-19.
The 36th ASEAN Summit is scheduled for April 6 in Da Nang city.
