(VOVworld) - The African Union (AU) has called on its member states to make their countries more attractive and safer to discourage citizens making perilous journeys in search of better lives. The statement was released at a memorial service for migrant victims at the AU headquarters in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the occasion, Wahade Belay, representing the Ethiopian government, noted that the situation requires a comprehensive and universal response to reduce poverty, and create jobs.

AU partners also reaffirmed their efforts to address the root causes of these tragedies and agreed that it was a huge challenge which required the intervention of the international community. They pledged to support and continue to work closely with other AU members to find a permanent solution.
