Held on a national scale from last October to February 2016 under the theme ‘Write a letter to your 45-year-old self’, this year’s competition was for writers between 10 and 15 years old. One hundred of the best letters were selected from more than 900,000 entries.

Ninth grader Nguyen Thi Thu Trang from Hai Duong province won the first prize. In her letter, Trang showed her deep understanding of two major issues facing people today: migration and discrimination. Through the imaginary words of Aylan Kurdi, a three-year-old Syrian boy of Kurdish ethnic background who made global headlines after he drowned on 2 September 2015 in the Mediterranean Sea in heaven, Trang shared her dream of a world free of violence, war and discrimination.

Trang’s letter has been translated into French and English to compete at the 45th UPU International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People in Switzerland.
