Beirut explosion: Lebanon calls for international support

(VOVWORLD) - At Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, Lebanese President Michel Aoun called on the international community to speed up aid package to the country following the deadly blast in Beirut a day earlier.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Wednesday that Tehran is ready to provide medical personnel and medicine to Lebanon.

Qatar began to transport medical equipment by plane to Beirut to build a field hospital. This is one of four Qatar medical relief flights which landed in Beirut on Wednesday.

The EU said it will urgently send rescue workers, shepherd dogs, and necessary equipment to Beirut to support the search and rescue work of those trapped in the collapse.

In a statement, Janez Lenarcic, the European Commissioner for Crisis Management, said that the EU Civil Protection Mechanism is now coordinating the urgent deployment of more than 100 highly trained firefighters, with vehicles, dogs and equipment, specialized in search and rescue in urban contexts.

France sent to Lebanon two aircraft carrying dozens of aid workers, a mobile medical unit, and 15 tons of aid. President Emmanuel Macron is expected to arrive in Beirut on Thursday to meet his Lebanese counterpart Michel Aoun and Prime Minister Hassan Diab.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said it will send 5 shipments by air to aid Beirut.
