(VOVworld) – A seminar was held in Hanoi today/on Thursday to examine children’s opinions on revision to laws on child protection, care, and education. A poll was conducted for two months beginning last July using written questionnaires in 10 provinces and cities, a phone survey, and an online survey. More than 34,000 children between the age of 11 and 18 participated in the survey. This is the first time the Ministry of Labor, Invalids, and Social Affairs has conducted a survey on revision to the 2004 law on child protection, care, and education. Deputy Minister Doan Mau Diep said at the seminar “The poll aimed to boost children’s rights, especially the right to contribute their opinions. The survey was an opportunity for them to say what they want to see in policies and legal documents relating to them.” Reports delivered at the meeting indicated that most children agreed that the age at which a child should legally considered adult should increase from the current 16 to 18 years old. A national children’s forum received strong support. Such a forum would create more opportunities for children to contribute their ideas and opinions about what their rights and duties should be.
