Demonstrations against anti-Islam film spread to Southeast Asia

(VNA) – Protests against an anti-Islam film made by an Egyptian - American which mocks the Prophet Mohammad have spread to several Southeast Asian nations. Demonstrations in Indonesia, which has the world’s largest Muslim population, turned violent yesterday when 700 protestors threw petrol bombs and clashed with guards outside the US Embassy in Jakarta. Anti-riot police fired water-cannons and tear gas and shot into the air to suppress protestors. In the Philippine city of Marawi, 3,000 Muslims gathered in the central square and burned US and Israeli flags. Local police have tightened security at embassies to ward off attacks. The US embassy in Thailand has closed in anticipation of possible demonstrations.
