At a meeting on combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing (IUU) with leaders of Ca Mau, Tien Giang, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Ben Tre, Bac Lieu, and Binh Dinh province on Thursday, the Deputy PM underscored the need to develop a database on fishing vessel management.

He asked the Border Guard to control entry and exit of fishing boats using software data. He stressed the importance of strict, prompt handling of IUU violations.

“It’s necessary to review all the registration and deregistration. We must update the data of the ships in operation and those deregistered. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development must direct coastal localities and other forces to work together to resolutely address the problem,” Mr Ha told the meeting.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam has 84,720 fishing vessels, and 98.6% of them have installed voyage monitoring device.
