EAS countries discuss COVID-19, East Sea issues

(VOVWORLD) - East Asia Summit (EAS) members affirmed their commitment to cooperate, support and promote COVID-19 vaccination worldwide at the virtual EAS Ambassadors' Meeting in Jakarta on Monday.

Ambassador Nguyen Hai Bang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to ASEAN, attended the meeting.

Participants discussed and assessed the Myanmar situation, denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, and the East Sea (internationally known as South China Sea) issue. Representatives of ASEAN’s partner countries affirmed their support for ASEAN and its central role in addressing regional issues and maintaining regional peace, stability, and security.

Participants want ASEAN and China to build an effective and substantive Code of Conduct in the East Sea in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1982 UNCLOS). They emphasised the importance of self-restraint, non-militarisation, and peaceful settlement of disputes on the basis of international law and the UNCLOS.
