President Mohamed Morsi has authorized Egypt's army to take on police powers including the right to arrest civilians and coordinate with police until the constitutional referendum’s result is released. Egyptian politics are locked in a conflict between government and opposition forces over a December 15 referendum on Egypt’s draft constitution. Up to now, Egypt’s army has been neutral and has not made any strong moves against protesters.
