The EU commission’s economic affairs spokesman Simon O’Connor said the EC welcomes Spain’s new fiscal measures after the Spanish government announced a new austerity package on Wednesday.

O’Connor said the EC looks forward to receiving details of the 65-billion-euro ($80 billion) package unveiled by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The package includes reduced spending and a higher VAT tax, which could total 65 billion euros by 2014.
