European Commission approves 19th Russia sanctions package

(VOVWORLD) - The European Commission (EC) has approved the proposal for the 19th package of European Union sanctions against Russia, EC’s chief spokesperson Paula Pinho said on Friday.

Pinho told a press conference in Brussels that the new sanctions package still needs EU member state approval.

Germany wants to work productively on ideas regarding the use of Russian assets frozen in the European Union, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil said in Copenhagen on Friday, indicating an openness in Berlin towards the legally fraught issue. Klingbeil said his coalition government was committed to pursuing more intensive use of the frozen assets, despite the legal difficulties.

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said on Friday his government supported the efforts made by the EC to monetize underlying frozen Russian assets held in the EU to help finance the Ukrainian government.
