Hamas rejects Egypt’s truce plan with Israel

(VOVworld) – The armed wing of the Palestinian group Hamas has rejected an Egyptian-proposed ceasefire with Israel. A Hamas spokesperson said Hamas would not agree on a truce without an official agreement halting all hostilities. Hamas considered Israel’s unilaterally cessation of hostile activities invalid after Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Earlier, Egypt proposed an immediate truce in Gaza, requesting Israel and Palestinian armed forces, including Hamas, to halt all hostile activities on land, air and in the sea. Cairo also asked Tel Aviv not to conduct any ground attacks targeting Gaza. Egypt’s plan took was supposed to take effect at 8 local time on Tuesday, asking for an unconditional 12-hour ceasefire. Israel's security cabinet held a meeting on Tuesday to discuss the proposal.
Also on Monday, Palestinian officials said the Palestinian administration (PA) was making efforts to hold an international peace conference to reach a ceasefire between Israel and Palestine. The PA said that the truce would not only resolve conflicts but also help resume the stalled Middle East peace process.
