Hong Kong chief says national security law conducive to stability

(VOVWORLD) - China’s newly promulgated law on safeguarding national security in Hong Kong is conducive to the region’s stability, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam said at a press conference on Tuesday.

Lam said it is a moderate law that only deals with imminent criminal behavior, insisting that the law will not create fear but restore stability to the city.

She said the implementation rules clearly stipulate that the law respect human rights. If the public obey the law, there is no need to worry.

The Hong Kong chief said the law protects the legitimate rights of every Hong Kong citizen, pursuant to Hong Kong’s Basic Law and international conventions.
