International Education Day 2023: For girls' right to school in Afghanistan

(VOVWORLD) -Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has decided to dedicate the 2023 International Day of Education (January 24) to Afghan girls and women. On the occasion of an event organized at the UN headquarters, UNESCO will renew its call to immediately restore their fundamental right to education.

“No country in the world should bar women and girls from receiving an education. Education is a universal human right that must be respected. The international community has the responsibility to ensure that the rights of Afghan girls and women are restored without delay. The war against women must stop,” she said.

The theme of this year’s International Day of Education reminds us that “to invest in people, prioritize education”. Investment is critical to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in Message for International Day.

"Education is a fundamental human right. It's the bedrock of societies, economies, and every person's potential. But without adequate investment, this potential will wither on the vine", he said.

“Let’s keep the flame of transformation burning. Let’s deliver education systems that can support equal societies, dynamic economies and the limitless dreams of every learner in the world,” added Guterres.
