The fine included 65 million USD in punitive damages, 11 million for the damage to her reputation, and another 7.3 million. Trump left the courtroom before the jury delivered its verdict.

His attorney, Alina Habba criticized not being able to bring up certain points in court that she said were part of Trump’s defense. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he will be appealing the verdict.

E. Jean Carroll was former advice columnist for Elle magazine. In 2019, she accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in 1996. Trump issued two statements in response, including one in which he outright denied her claim. Carroll then sued Trump for defamation at a New York court and filed a second lawsuit in November 2022. In May 2023, another jury ordered Trump to pay Carroll 5 million USD, finding that he had defamed and sexually abused Carroll, who later demanded a minimum of 10 million USD from Trump.
