Legislators call for social housing for lease to ensure people’s right to accommodation

(VOVWORLD) - Lawmakers have proposed building social housing for lease rather than purchase, saying the incentive will enable more low-income people to get accommodations.

Deputy Nguyen Van Hien representing Lam Dong province said at a National Assembly session Monday that current social housing policies seems to encourage ownership rather than fulfill people’s right to accommodations.

Most low-income people are workers or laborers who cannot effort social housing despite it being the cheapest kind in the market, he said.

Deputy Nguyen Lam Thanh of Thai Nguyen province said there must be breakthroughs in building social housing for lease.

“The 2021-2030 socio-economic development strategy and the 2021-2025 socio-economic development plan encourage the development of social housing, affordable housing, housing for lease, and housing for workers at industrial parks."

They also encourage all economic sectors to get involved in housing development for disadvantaged people, he noted.
