NA Standing Committee convenes 35th session

(VOVworld) - The 35th session of the National Assembly Standing Committee opened in Hanoi on Wednesday. Deputies focused their discussions on remaining differences regarding the draft law on the election of deputies to the National Assembly and People’s Councils. Most of the deputies agreed on regulations stated in the draft law regarding a National Electoral Council to be established when the electoral date is announced, and dissolved when National Assembly Deputies are named. Truong Thi Mai, chairwoman of the National Assembly's Committee for Social Affairs, said: "I agree with the establishment of a National Electoral Council every new working term of the National Assembly and People’s Councils. If it’s necessary to elect additional deputies in the middle of a term, we’ll follow procedures set in the Constitution to establish a national electoral committee which is in charge of organizing the election of National Assembly deputies."

Some deputies argued that there should not be regulations on the activities of People’s Councils in a 5-year term as this goes against administrative reform targets. Phung Quoc Hien, chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Finance and State Budget talked about regulations regarding the proportions of female and ethnic National Assembly deputies: "I think such regulations would make it more difficult for us to work. If less than 30% of elected deputies are female, will this election be recognized or not? I think there should be a proportion for every working term which is based on deputies’ support rate."

The meeting will end on Friday.
