Ukraine, Moldova begin EU accession talks in Luxembourg

(VOVWORLD) - The Belgian presidency of the EU has announced that the first negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova’s accession took place in Luxembourg on Tuesday. 

This followed a challenging agreement where all 26 EU member states persuaded Hungary to stop blocking the process. Charles Michels, President of the European Council, said that this is a historic moment, which shows the credibility of the European Union, the strength of the European Union.

“We opened negotiations with Ukraine and with Moldova,” she said, adding that this is an extremely important and very powerful political decision.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday to prepare for the Washington Summit in July.

Macron said the summit will prioritize the Russia-Ukraine conflict and security support for Ukraine. He confirmed that French troops will not be deployed to Ukraine at this time.
