(VOVworld) – A new 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and the Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas took effect in the Gaza Strip Sunday night.

New 72-hour cease-fire takes effect in Gaza

Israel agreed to an Egyptian proposal for a new 72-hour ceasefire after Palestinian negotiators in Cairo also agreed to a humanitarian pause. At a weekly cabinet meeting on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military operation will resume if Hamas continues to fire rockets and mortar shells at Israeli territories. Violence in Gaza has killed 1939 Palestinians and 67 Israelis since last Tuesday.  No progress has been seen in peace talks toward a long-term truce between Israel and Hamas because the two parties refuse to make any concessions.
