​President engages in high-level meetings at UN General Assembly

(VOVWORLD) - President Luong Cuong on Wednesday met with the President of the 80th UN General Assembly, the Presidents of Turkey and Iraq, and the US Secretary of State, as part of his participation in the General Assembly’s High-Level General Debate and bilateral activities in the United States.

In talks with UNGA President Annalena Baerbock, President Cuong underscored Vietnam’s preparations to host the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi next month, and its readiness to assume the presidency of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2026. He also outlined Vietnam’s candidacies for several important UN bodies and sought Baerbock’s active support.

Meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Cuong said bilateral relations were entering a promising new phase. The two leaders agreed to boost trade to 4 billion USD and explore new frameworks to facilitate trade and investment, including the possibility of negotiating a free trade agreement.

During his meeting with Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, the Vietnamese President proposed more business exchanges to unlock cooperation potential and expand access to the Halal market. He expressed hope that Iraq will create favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to invest in sectors aligned with Iraq’s reconstruction priorities.

During his talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both sides discussed cooperation in politics and diplomacy, trade and investment, defense and security, science and technology, education, and humanitarian efforts on war legacy issues.

President Cuong called for solutions to outstanding concerns, particularly reciprocal tariff matters, and welcomed greater US investment in strategic fields like semiconductors and high-quality workforce training. He also urged Washington to soon recognize Vietnam as a market economy and remove it from the list of countries under strategic export controls.

These meetings marked the conclusion of President Luong Cuong’s working trip to the United States. On Wednesday afternoon (local time), he and his wife, along with the Vietnamese high-level delegation, departed New York for home.
