UN statistics show that 800 Iraqi lost their lives in August alone, and Baghdad bore one third of the bloody attacks. The worst movement of violence in recent years has raised fear of a sectarian conflict similar to that seen between 2006 and 2007, during which the death toll sometimes reached 3,000 a month.
