Syria: Fresh peace efforts after truce collapses

Syria continues to be bogged down in violence with continuous car bombs, airstrikes and skirmishes between government and opposition forces. The 4 day ceasefire for the Eid al-Adha Muslim holiday has been broken for the 3rd time. Observers said the initiative by UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has failed. According to diplomatic sources, Mr. Brahimi is seeking renewed efforts to settle the 19-month crisis in Syria. Next month, the UN-Arab League envoy will submit to the UN Security Council new proposals to speed up talks between Syrian President Basha al-Assad and opposition factions. This week, Mr. Brahimi will continue with his shuttle diplomatic activities, going to Russia and China to discuss the Syrian issue.

The Syrian army has accused “terrorist elements” of going too far in breaching the truce, saying it has been tasked with attacking this terrorist group.
