UN Secretary General appoints President of International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals

(VOVworld) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Tuesday appointed Judge Theodor Meron of the US President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.

Judge Meron will serve concurrently as President of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and President of the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. The appointment was made after consulting the President of the Security Council and the judges of the tribunals. The mechanism was established by Security Council resolution 1966 in 2010 to carry out the residual functions of ICTY and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. It has two branches in Arusha, Tanzania, and The Hague, Netherlands.
