U.N Security Council held a closed-door meeting on Syria

The U.N Security Council on Wednesday held a private meeting on Syria issue. International envoy to Syria Kofi Annan said the crisis has been lasting over 1 year and if Syrian government and the opposition do not carry out any specific political negotiations, a “full-scale civil war” will break out.

U.S envoy to Syria Susan Rice warned if Annan’s peace plan fails, the violence will escalate and spread to the whole region. The U.S and allies may consider to take actions outside of the authority of the UNSC. Russian envoy to Syria Vitaly Churkin raised objections on increasing pressure on Syria via UN’s sanctions.
