(VOVworld) – UN-Arab League Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi on Monday said parties involved are discussing a complete list of participants to the Geneva II international conference on Syria following a close-door trilateral meeting in Geneva gathering high-ranking officials from the UN, the US, and Russia. Brahimi said the three countries were in close touch with the Syrian government and its opposition asking them to name their delegations as early as possible, hopefully before the end of the year.

Asked whether the opposition will be represented by the Syrian National Coalition (SNC), Brahimi said that the SNC would play a very important role in forming the delegation, while stressing that the delegation has to be "credible and representative, as representative as possible."

Brahimi said that not all the people who want to come to Geneva would be able to come.

On the same day, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the meeting will be held on January 22, where representatives of the government and opposition parties will gather at the negotiating table for the first time since the outbreak of the conflict in March 2011.

On Monday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said that military solutions would never be able to stop the violent conflict that has claimed the lives of more than 100,000 people in Syria over the past three years. The upcoming conference would be the best opportunity to realize the Geneva Declaration and establish a new transitional government in Syria through a document agreed by all.
