The UN General Assembly today will vote on a draft resolution to upgrade Palestine’s status. After a speech by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the 193 members of the UN General Assembly will vote. Palestine’s current status is observer entity. If a majority vote in favor, Palestine will become an observer non-member state, which is similar to the Vatican’s status, and will be allowed access to international organizations such as the International Criminal Court. 127 UN members including Russia, France, and Switzerland are ready to acknowledge the Palestine government. The US once again has warned that if the draft resolution is passed, Palestine will receive no more aid from Washington. Israel has also threatened severe economic sanctions.
