(VOVWORLD) - The White House said Friday that the US will impose a 25% import tariff on Canada and Mexico and a 10% on China starting on February 1.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the tariff plans are in line with President Donald Trump’s statement several weeks ago.
"I can confirm that tomorrow, the February 1 deadline that President Trump put into place in a statement several weeks ago. The President will impose 25-percent duties on Mexico and Canada, and 10% duties on China, because of illegal fentanyl that they have sourced and allowed to distribute into our country, which has killed tens of millions of Americans. These are promises made and promises kept by the President.”
Trump pledged to use tariffs to boost domestic manufacturing and raise revenue for the federal government. However, higher import tariffs on these countries could increase consumption prices for Americans and disrupt a number of industries, such as energy, automobiles, wood and agriculture.
Both Canada and Mexico said they have prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs if necessary.
