US calls latest round of nuclear talks with Iran 'encouraging'

(VOVWORLD) - US Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff said the fourth round of talks in Oman between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear program were encouraging, while Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described them as "difficult but useful".

The US insisted that Iran must scrap its uranium enrichment to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.

Iran expressed readiness to limit certain aspects of its nuclear program if the US lifts its sanctions. But, Iran also firmly insisted on its right to enrich uranium and to retain its existing stockpile of enriched uranium. Tehran rejected any negotiations regarding its ballistic missile program and demanded firm guarantees that the US will not withdraw from any future agreements.

The latest round of negotiations took place just a day before US President Donald Trump embarks on his first official visit to the Middle East this term. His itinerary includes stops in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Iran and its nuclear program are expected to be key agenda items during the trip.
