Although it was rejected by the House, the catfish inspection program remains a high risk for Vietnamese Tra fish because it is supported by many Senators. If the program is not ironed out by both Houses, the US market will be closed for Vietnamese Tra fish in a long period, causing great damage to Vietnamese exporters and hundreds of thousands of farmers. If the program is given to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it will take 5 to 7 years for Vietnam to improve its production and processing procedures to the same standard with US aquaculture producers and processors. Vietnam earns approximately 400 million USD annually from exporting Tra fish to the US.
