(VOVWORLD) - Any move by the US to impose tariffs on Vietnamese goods would hurt bilateral trade ties, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) said after Reuters reported that the US Department of Commerce will continue imposing tariffs on Vietnamese goods because of accusations that Vietnam is manipulating its currency.
Vietnam said it regretted the US Trade Representative’s decision on October 2 to launch an investigation into Vietnam’s currency at a time when the two nations are enjoying fruitful relations in diplomacy, culture, economy, and trade, but said it would cooperate with the investigation.
Representatives from the State Bank of Vietnam are scheduled to hold a bilateral consultation with the US later this month. Vietnam hopes the US will take an objective view of Vietnam’s policies and management, the Ministry said.
According to the Ministry, many associations, organizations, businesses strongly oppose the investigation and the intention to impose duties on Vietnamese goods, saying it goes against the two countries’ interests. If the duties are imposed, producers and consumers in both countries will be hurt.
