US, Japan plan upgrade to security cooperation

(VOVWORLD) - The Financial Times reported on Sunday that the US and Japan are planning the most significant upgrade in their security cooperation since signing a mutual defense treaty in 1960.

US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will announce the plan at the White House on April 10 during Kishida's visit to the US, according to the London-based newspaper.

Under the plan, the US will reorganize its military command in Japan to enhance combat planning and joint exercises. Japan is a close ally and plays a crucial role in US strategic efforts in Asia.
