US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement on Wednesday shortly after he arrived in Baghdad to meet with Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. Blinken said the package aims to help citizens displaced by the conflict, including those who will be affected by the upcoming operation in Mosul.

The additional funding will increase the amount of humanitarian aid from the US to Iraq to 1.1 billion USD. The aid began in 2014, when the Islamic State group took over large parts of Iraq.
