The Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision concluded that under the US’s constitutional separation of powers, the nature of presidential power requires that a former president have some immunity from criminal prosecution for official acts during his tenure in office.

The ruling reversed a lower court's decision that denied Mr. Trump's request for immunity from federal criminal charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 Presidential election results.

Trump hailed the Supreme Court's immunity ruling, calling it a big win for the US Constitution and democracy while President Joe Biden's campaign team said the ruling does not alter the illegality of what occurred during the January 6, 2021 riot.

Legal experts said the Supreme Court's ruling is a landmark decision that could reshape the President's power and alter the entire US political system.
