Meeting Ambassador Vinh were Senator Ben Cardin, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on East Asian and Pacific Affairs; Congressman Steve Chabot, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific; and Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo, a member of the House Subcommittee on Military Personnel and the House Committee on Natural Resources.
The US legislators highlighted the progress in bilateral relations and the potential for future development, saying that 2015 will mark a new milestone as the two countries celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic normalisation. They said Asia-Pacific continues to be a strategic priority of the US, and that relations with ASEAN and Vietnam play a significant role. They said territorial disputes in the region should be resolved peacefully in line with international law and regional codes of conduct.
Ambassador Vinh said he hopes for continued support from the US Congress for bilateral relations’ development contributing to their national interest as well as to regional peace, stability, and growth.
