Both sides emphasized the need to approach Asia-Pacific territorial tensions and sea disputes from peaceful international legal perspectives, respecting the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and ASEAN-China agreements including the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties (DOC) in the East Sea and the Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).   Canada commended ASEAN’s role in facilitating regional multilateral security cooperation, highlighting mechanisms like the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+). Canada is interested in participating and requested Vietnamese support.

Both sides updated each other on their respective defence policies and defence cooperation orientations, discussing key areas such as delegation exchanges, research and training links between institutions and schools, and humanitarian activities as well as UN peace keeping cooperation.

The Vietnamese delegation also toured a number of Canadian navy vessels and the Peace Support Training Centre (PSTC).
