(VOVWORLD) - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Tuesday welcomed the Global Methane Pledge initiative, calling it a right choice and the fastest, most cost-effective and beneficial solution to the current climate emergency.

The Prime Minister made the remarks at the launch of the Global Methane Pledge under the co-chair of US President Joe Biden and President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen in Glasgow, the UK, on Tuesday.
He pointed out that the cause of earth's temperature increase is methane gas generated from the unscientific and unsustainable production and treatment of waste. He called on all countries to join hands to reduce methane emissions.
“I call on all of us to unite and join actions to cut methane emissions that are threatening our lives. This is a global issue, so a global approach must be taken. It affects everyone, we must have an all-people and people-centered approach, which takes people as the players, goal and motivation to reduce methane emissions.”
He urged developed countries, with the richest being the US and the EU, to share and support developing and poor nations in training and innovation as well as technology, finance, institutional building, and administrative sciences, among other fields, thereby helping them participate in the process of reducing methane emissions.
The pledge to reduce global methane emissions was signed by nearly 90 countries, aiming to reduce the potent greenhouse gas methane by 30 percent by 2030 compared to the 2020 level. Vietnam's pledge is in line with the country's strategic orientation for sustainable development and the general trend of the world. Cooperation activities within the framework of the Commitment will create conditions for Vietnam to strengthen international cooperation in finance, technology transfer and capacity building, contributing to improving the competitiveness of the economy through the application of new technology emitting less methane and greenhouse gas.
Earlier, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the Leaders Action on Forests and Land Use session chaired by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson. By adopting the Declaration, more than 100 leaders were committed to halting and reversing deforestation and land degradation by 2030, contributing to the goal of keeping global temperature rise at 1.5°C, and at the same time supporting sustainable development, equitable transition in rural areas through specific actions, suitable to national conditions and circumstances.
