She said the international community should strengthen cooperation, fulfill development assistance commitments, enhance capacity building and technology transfer, and create favorable conditions for developing countries when formulating and implementing social development policies. Themed “Rethinking and strengthening social development in the contemporary world”, the 53rd session of the UN Commission for Social Development of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will continue until next Friday.

The same day, a ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of the World Summit for Social Development opened on the sideline of the session. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the ceremony that the Copenhagen Declaration affirms that social development and justice are fundamental for sustainable development. He said the citizens of the world should remain at the centre of development, adding that the Copenhagen Declaration has inspired many subsequent intergovernmental commitments including the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals.
