A planning meeting for the report took place in Hanoi on Tuesday, co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam and World Bank Vice President Axel van Trotsenburg. Vietnam recorded an average annual growth of 5.7 per cent in the past two decades, the second highest figure in the world. In order to keep up with other economies, like the Republic of Korea or Taiwan (China), Vietnam needs to maintain an average annual growth rate of 9 per cent over the next 20 years.
At the meeting Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam urged the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the National Council for Sustainable Development and Competitiveness Improvement to co-operate with the World Bank and other international organisations to devise a list of key tasks to improve Vietnam’s business environment and national competitiveness. The draft should also sketch out specific norms, targets, tasks, and responsibilities of ministries and related agencies to iron out administrative snags hindering business.
