(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam will closely collaborate with the international community, the United Nations and related parties in preventing and resolving conflicts and ensuring a safe, bright future for children worldwide, Minister Counsellor Nguyen Hoang Nguyen, deputy head of the Permanent Delegation of Vietnam to the UN, told the UN Security Council’s annual open debate on children and armed conflict held in New York on Thursday.

He said respect for the UN Charter, international law, and international humanitarian law plays a significant role in child protection.

All parties in conflicts must comply with their obligations under international law and relevant UN resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 2573 on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, which was proposed by Vietnam.

Mr. Nguyen said that, to better protect children in conflicts, it is necessary to strengthen collaboration among member countries and agencies of the UN like the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN Development Program (UNDP), and UN peacekeeping missions.

A comprehensive approach will create a framework to connect peacekeeping missions and economic development with child protection before, during, and after conflicts, he said.
