Vietnam-Cambodia joint statement

(VOVworld) – Vietnam and Cambodia released a joint statement on Thursday to mark President Tran Dai Quang’s state visit.

The statement said Vietnam and Cambodia are committed to consolidating and developing bilateral ties under the motto “good neighborliness, traditional friendship, and long-lasting, comprehensive cooperation” with respect to each other’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. Both countries vowed not to interfere in each other’s internal affairs and not allow any enemy force to use its territory to threaten the other’s security, and settle any arising problems through peaceful negotiations. They agreed to increase the exchange of visits and encourage people-to-people exchanges, particularly along the border areas. Vietnam and Cambodia agreed to quickly increase two-way trade to 5 billion USD. They agreed to fully implement all border agreements and soon finalize border demarcation and marker planting. The two countries agreed to strengthen coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums towards increasing ASEAN’s unified and central role. Both countries encourage the peaceful settlement of disputes, including negotiations and consultations, restraint, and renouncing the use of or threatening to use force in accordance with international law including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Both countries pledged close cooperation with other members of the Mekong River Commission, the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Mechanism, and other Mekong cooperation mechanisms to ensure the sustainable management and use of its resources. Vietnam and Cambodia agreed to hold activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties on June 24, 2017.
