A Laos Asia Telecom and Viettel Group Joint Venture Company, Star Telecom-Unitel, held a media conference in Vientiane, Laos, on Monday after Unitel received a 2012 World Communication Award. This is one of the most prestigious communication awards in the world initiated by Total Telecom UK Magazine in 1999. Laos Deputy of Communications Thansamay Kommasit said this is the first time a Laos telecommunications company has received the award. In the three years since it opened, Unitel has been innovating and boosting solidarity between Laos and Vietnam. The company overcame disadvantages to become the biggest telecommunication network in Laos, with a 40% mobile phone market share worth 160 million USD in revenue and a 40-50% market growth this year.
