The Ministry of Transport has approved the inspection, renovation, and structural upgrades of 59 container berths to accommodate large cargo ships.

There are currently three seaports in Vietnam listed among the Top 50 largest container ports globally in terms of throughput, namely Ho Chi Minh City Port, Hai Phong Port and Cai Mep-Thi Vai Port. In addition, the Ministry of Transport has recently agreed in principle for the Cai Mep-Thi Vai Port to receive reduced-load container ships with a carrying capacity of up to 214,121 DWT.

The government has just approved adjustments to the National Seaport System Development Master Plan in the period 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, said Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration Le Do Muoi. Under the plan, Vietnam’s seaport system is expected to handle 1.25-1.5 million tons of cargo by 2030, including 46-54 million TEUs  (not taking into account international transshipment) and serve 17.4-18.8 million passengers.
