Vietnam’s water puppetry adapts Andersen’s fairy tales

(VOVworld) – Vietnam’s water puppetry has, for the first time, drawn on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales. This is the result of a cooperative project between the Vietnam Puppetry Theatre and France’s Interart Riviera SA Organization. French support has enabled local puppeteers to make puppets, build a water stage, and rehearse for the past 3 months 3 plays - “The Tin Soldier”, “The Ugly Duckling”, and “The Little Mermaid”. These plays were adapted from fairy tales written for children by world-renowned Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen.

Meritorious artist Nguyen Tien Dung, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Puppetry Theatre, said: "Famous stories by Danish writer Andersen combined with water puppetry promotes Vietnam’s art while reflecting international integration. A Vietnamese director working with foreign musicians and Vietnam’s water puppetry telling foreign stories - that’s a convergence which I think profitable. Vietnamese artists have a new experience to better understand the artistic differences between Vietnamese and Western culture".
