Chemistry teacher makes hand sanitizers to help fight Covid-19

(VOVWORLD) - The public health emergency caused by the new coronavirus outbreak (COVID-19) motivated a chemistry teacher in the central province of Quang Tri to create an anti-bacterial hand wash, and distribute it to school staff and others.

Fear of Covid-19 has created a huge surge in demand for cleaning products and hand sanitizers. Anticipating market shortages, teacher Vo Phuoc Hung at Luong The Vinh primary and secondary school thought of making his own anti-bacterial hand wash and distributing it to the public. His hand sanitizers are made from ethanol, hydroperoxide, glycerin, and distilled water.

“I researched on the internet and followed a formula recommended by the World Health Organization. I wanted to duplicate this formula so that households and schools can protect themselves from the disease,” said Hung.

Hung said there is a wide range of hand gels sold in the market, with prices ranging from 6.5 to 8.5 USD. The cost of his products is only one third.

Phan Thi Hong Phuc, head of Luong The Vinh school, said that although the school is closed to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the teachers still go to school to prepare online lessons, so there is still a need for sanitation. She said Hung’s anti-bacterial hand wash feels cool on the skin and has no side effects.

“Vo Phuoc Hung is a highly qualified teacher. His hand sanitizers seem to be effective in preventing the spread of Covid-19.” she said.

Hung has received many orders from schools and local organizations, but he said he didn’t make the hand sanitizer for money, but to help people protect themselves.

Do Van Hung, head of Quang Tri province’s Health Department, praised Hung’s effort, which has raised public awareness of the epidemic.

“Individuals and organizations are encouraged to make liquid hand wash for themselves, as long as it meets medical standards and is safe for the environment and people” he said.
