32 – year – old Tran Trong Duong has been studying Chinese – transcribed Vietnamese for 9 years. He was a lecturer of old Chinese language at the University of Culture before moving to the Institute of Chinese – transcribed Vietnamese in 2007 to have more time for research. Duong earned a Doctorate in Vietnamese language of the 14th century last year. Doctor Duong is the author or co-author of 5 books on linguistics, research, and translation, including a dictionary of ancient Vietnamese words and scripts, and a textbook on ancient Vietnamese language. "When I study Chinese – transcribed Vietnamese, I have the advantage of historical materials. Studying Vietnamese history or traditional culture should be based on old documents. I write about history and culture to satisfy people’s curiosity about the past and our predecessors’ traditions", Doctor Duong says.

Doctor Duong says doing research requires an objective and scientific approach. "In science, an opponent is a must. Those who criticize us are the most helpful people. Compliments are useless. What we write is not perfect and we need the opinions of senior experts."

Nguyen Hung Vy, a lecturer at the Literature Faculty of the National University of Social Science and Humanity, has always shared his expertise with Doctor Duong. Vy says young researchers like Duong are treasures of social science who need support and encouragement. "Tran Trong Duong is young. He has studied this subject for only 10 years, but with his great effort, passion, and advanced methodology, Duong has become a phenomenon at scientific research. His achievements are remarkable. For example, it took him three months to transcribe the 12,400-word dictionary for the Collection of Poems in the National Language written by Nguyen Trai. It was such a respectful working attitude and capacity. He has the advantage of fluency in the ancient Chinese and Vietnamese languages, modern Chinese, and English", Duong says.

Tran Trong Duong has a passion for writing calligraphy, ancient cultural symbols, and ancient history. He has participated in many calligraphy exhibitions inside and outside Vietnam. Duong said studying ancient history and Chinese – transcribed Vietnamese has given him a time machine with which to return to the past, where he can explore and preserve national time-honored culture.
