Senior Lieutenant-colonel Le Duc Doan

Chuong Duong is one of the main bridges linking Hanoi’s center and its northern outskirts. Whether it’s sunny or rainy, senior lieutenant-colonel Le Duc Doan of the Hanoi Traffic Police Department is never absent from his post. His tanned face is familiar to many commuters. Doan says it makes him happy when passers-by wave to him or smile at him. In addition to his traffic duties, Doan has talked many people out of suicide attempts by jumping from the bridge in a movement of desperation. Doan says: "In the last 10 years, I’ve helped save more than 30 people who wanted to jump from the bridge. In 2011 and 12, I prevented 10 attempted suicides. I do it out of compassion. I think anybody, no matter what their job is, should not be emotionless toward other people."

Doan has cooperated with other police sectors to catch robbers. In 2005, in a hunt for a criminal gang he was surrounded by 10 robbers. He was seriously wounded and was hospitalized in three months. This year, Doan received the honorary for “Outstanding citizen” for his good deeds. Doan said he has never set his sights on earning any reward, but always follows the motto of serving the people unconditionally. "My actions derive from my humanity because I’m not emotionless toward other’s situations. When I’ve done my job, I feel relaxed and confident. I’m determined to improve my performance day by day," Doan says.

Doan says he thoroughly knows daily bus schedules, traffic patterns throughout the day and for recurring events, and even has a feeling for the flow of people coming in and out of the city. He deals with traffic law violators to make them aware of the rights and responsibilities of road-users. Colonel Doan was awarded the title Traffic Knight by the National Traffic Safety Committee, VOV’s Traffic Channel, Ho Chi Minh city’s radio station, and the Total Company. Nguyen Thinh is a reporter for VOV’s Traffic Channel. "Le Duc Doan has not only made achievements in the traffic sector, but has also done good deeds of social significance. He has saved many women who desperately attempted to commit suicide. He has fulfilled his traffic duties and cooperated with other forces to catch robbers. We vote for him to be this year’s traffic knight for his positive and meaningful activities."

Senior Lieutenant-colonel Le Duc Doan is a shining example of a dedicated and pro-active policeman serving society.
