Mai Chau Phuong teaches chemistry at Lam Son High School for the Gifted in the central province of Thanh Hoa. Many of her students have won prizes at national and international chemistry competitions.

“Ms. Phuong taught us in a systematic manner, which makes it easy for us to understand and remember. We are now able to think and work independently and are confident competing with other students at national and international competitions,” said student Nguyen Duc Anh.

When teaching chemistry, Phuong focuses on doing experiments, which make the principles in the textbooks come alive and teaches the students the relationship between theoretical knowledge and practical application.

“Starting in the 10th grade, I select outstanding students who are ready for competition. Then I work out a specific curriculum, tests, and special teaching methods to train them. I set goals for my students for each period of time so they will work harder and become more confident in the competitions,” said Phuong.

Phuong spends a lot of time reading and preparing interesting lessons for her students. Over the past 5 years, Lam Son school students have won 1 gold medal and 1 silver medal at the International Chemistry Olympiads, and many prizes at national chemistry competitions.

“Mai Chau Phuong is an enthusiastic and competent teacher who has inspired many students with her teaching methods. She has made great achievements during her teaching career and has inspired her colleagues,” said Chu Anh Tuan, the principal of Lam Son school.

Mai Chau Phuong has been awarded the Third Class Labor Order from Vietnam’s State President.
